What are the main features of removable braces?
Removable braces also called clear aligners, work using a series of plastic molds that are changed every few weeks. Patients using clear aligners must be compliant in wearing them, often 22 hours a day, to ensure successful treatment. Many patients achieve excellent results with removable devices, whereas others with more severe issues require fixed devices.
What are the main features of fixed braces?
Fixed devices are comprised of a set of brackets and wires that are attached to the teeth. The orthodontist makes slight adjustments to the wires to gradually pull brackets and teeth into the proper position. There is a variety of fixed brace treatment options, including new technology that is meant to straighten teeth faster than traditional methods. Compared to removable braces, fixed braces are more visible but may be required to correct certain orthodontic issues.
Are their different types of clear aligners?
Often patients are familiar with the brand name Invisalign, which is just one brand name of many. Although several companies make clear aligners, they all work using the same process. Impressions of the patient’s teeth are taken to create each mold that the patient will wear during treatment.
Are their different types of fixed braces?
- Metal Braces: steel brackets are attached to each tooth and metal wires are threaded through the brackets. The wires are held on using traditional rubberband ligatures or built-in clips on self-ligating braces.
- Ceramic Braces: brackets made of ceramic or porcelain are tooth-colored and despite using metal wires, they are less visible than metal braces. The metal wires are held on through the same two methods used with metal braces.
- FastBraces: while still using brackets and wires, the new Fastbrace technology using different mechanics to move the tooth crown and root simultaneously. Because traditional devices move the crown and root in two stages, the Fastbrace process can straighten teeth months or even years quicker.
